After rave reviews from overseas, Hawaii delivered a box of toads to Gordonvale, simply south of Cairns. These were kept in captivity for some time, their numbers were increased by reproducing, some experimental trials were performed, then they were released into the sugar cane fields of the tropic north. It was later discovered that the toads (scientific name Bufo marinus) cannot jump extremely high so they did not eat the cane beetles which keeping upped on the upper stalks of the cane plants. At the time of year when the beetle's larvae were emerging from the ground, no toads had to do with. So the walking stick toad, as it came to be understood, had no effect on the cane beetles at all and farmers needed to go back to the use of chemicals to eliminate the beetle.<br /><br />On the other hand, the 'cat ran out the bag' or, more properly, the toads were out of the box! However there were just a couple of hundred of them so no one gave any thought to catching them up once again and disposing of them. The toads were on their own and they showed to be extremely sturdy survivors. They turned out to be a lot more than we bargained for and it didn't take long to discover how well the toads would do in their new Australian home.<br /><br /> <ul> <li>They reproduce like flies, as the saying goes. Each pair of cane toads can lay 33,000 eggs per spawning (some published references approximate they produce as much as 60,000 eggs!).</li> <li>Their 'toadpoles' develop faster than numerous Australian frogs so they can outcompete our frogs for food.</li> <li>Toads and toadpoles appear to be resistant to some herbicides and eutrophic water which would typically eliminate frogs and tadpoles.</li> <li>All stages of a toad's life are harmful so they have no natural predators to keep their numbers in check (although Mike Tyler's work recommends that toad juveniles are not harmful until they reach about 3cm in size but this provides a question: why would an animal lose its toxicity at the juvenile phase when it has it during larvae and adult phases?).</li> <li>Toads not just consume the food typically offered to Australian frogs, there is growing anecdotal evidence that they consume frogs as well, particularly metamorphs.</li> </ul> Fish who eat toadpoles pass away. Animals who eat toad grownups pass away. The museums have lots of snakes preserved in containers which were eliminated by toad contaminant so fast, the toad is still in their mouths unswallowed. He in the end handed her a pet cat called Alaska as a present, the cat that Barbara later understands is almost the same like the cat called Alaska that her family used to have.<br /><br />When Alysia comes back to home in the future, she discovers Barbara standup over unconscious followers of the Joker's group. Barbara makes an apology, speaking she hasn't been truthful with Alysia, and she must go to reach the police and report to them there has been a robbery; she too says her that she will never see Barbara for a second time. Rather than taking Barbara's recommendation, Alysia phones James Gordon Jr. He picks her up and brings her to the church where the Joker is attempting to push Batgirl to get married with him. Alysia eyewitnesses the situation from outside and seems to understand how crazy her mate James actually is.<br /><br />Later afterwards, Barbara comes home and reveals many of her private story behind her with Alysia (but of course without knowing her secret as Batgirl). It is at this period that Alysia, after for quite some time attempted many times in the previous months to do so, in the end explains that she is transgender with Barbara. Barbara replies with a humble but earnest testimony of love and acceptance.

In places where the corn dolly custom was not established, the last few stalks of corn were violently beaten into the ground, thus driving the spirit back into the Earth.<br /><br />The dolly was made into the shape of an old woman, representing the Crone aspect of the Harvest Goddess. She was drenched in water as a further propitiation to the Gods and to ensure that plenty of rain would feed the harvest to come. Different areas had different styles of corn dollies.<br /><br />However, the custom of preserving the spirit of the harvest was not always carried out in such a genteel way. The Phrygians, who lived in central Asia Minor and worshipped the Mother of the Gods, Cybele, carried out a different sort of ceremony. Their “corn dolly” was formed from thickly plaited sheaves of corn formed into a tall column. Any stranger found in the vicinity was captured in the belief that his presence there would mean that the spirit of the harvest had possessed his body and caused him to wander into the area. The hapless stranger was then trapped within this cage of corn and then beheaded in the belief that the blood that fell upon the ground contained the valuable “soul” of the crop.
