green, cone-like fruits of a hardy, twining vine native to Europe, 
western Asia, and North America. They are probably best known by 
brewers—and beer drinkers—for giving aroma and flavor to beer. 
Interestingly enough, hops were originally added to beer for their 
natural preservative properties. Only later did they come to be valued 
for the bitter, but agreeable, taste they impart to the drink. The 
Romans ate the young shoots of the hops plant as if it were asparagus, a
 practice that continued in rural parts of the British Isles well into 
the 20th century. Roman physician Pliny the Elder named hops <i>Lupus salictarius</i>,
 which means “willow wolf” and refers to the vine’s habit of twining 
around other plants and strangling them, like a wolf does to sheep. The 
plant’s species name, <i>lupulus</i>, is Latin for “small wolf,” a 
similar reference. Hops were used medicinally in Europe and by Native 
Americans in North America. Today, their greatest value in herbal 
medicine is as a calming, natural sedative.</div>

Though most famous as an ingredient vital to brewing 
beer, hops have been used to improve appetite and digestion, to relieve 
toothache and nerve pain, and to treat insomnia around the world. It is 
said that Abraham Lincoln relied upon hops pillows to relax and to improve his sleep.</div>

Today, Germany’s health authorities continue to 
approve the use of hops for “discomfort due to restlessness or anxiety 
and sleep disturbances.” Most of the scientific research evaluating the 
effectiveness of hops for anxiety and sleep has been conducted with a 
combination of hops and valerian, another popular sedative herb. Three 
controlled studies have shown that this combination is more effective 
than placebo and similar in effectiveness to benzodiazepines (sleep medications) 
for shortening the time it takes to fall asleep and for improving sleep 
quality. None of the studies reported excessive morning sleepiness or 
rebound insomnia when the participants stopped taking the herbs.</div>

One area that is garnering attention is the potential 
use of hops for the relief of menopausal symptoms. Researchers have 
identified at least one key compound in hops, 8-prenylnaringenin, that 
is linked to significant hormonal activity. A 6-week study in menopausal
 women found that a standardized hops extract reduced hot flashes, night
 sweats, and insomnia. Another study found that a topically applied gel 
containing hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and hops extract significantly 
improved vaginal dryness in postmenopausal women. Hops might prove to be
 an attractive alternative to conventional hormone therapy, but more 
research is needed to determine long-term safety.</div>

<b>How to Use</b></h2>

<i>Tea:</i> Steep 1 teaspoon hops strobiles 
(female flowers) in 1 cup water for 5 to 7 minutes. Add honey to taste. 
Drink 30 minutes before bed.</div>

<i>Capsules:</i> 500 mg, 1 to 3 times daily; often taken in combination with valerian root.</div>
<div class="nonindent">
<i>Tincture:</i> 2 ml tincture, 1 to 3 times daily.</div>

<b>Precautions</b></h2>

Given the potential for increased hormonal activity
 stimulated by hops, women who have had breast cancer or who are at risk
 for it should avoid hops until more is known. Safety in pregnancy is 
not known. Hops may have sedative effects, so driving or operating heavy
 machinery should not be attempted while using hops.<br />

It borders CANADA to the east, the PACIFIC OCEAN to the south, the Bering Sea to the west, and the ARCTIC OCEAN to the north. Alaska has several distinct physical regions. <br />

The southernmost region is named the Pacific Mountain System. The panhandle in the southeast mainly comprises the Alexander Archipalego, while south-central Alaska is made up of the Alaska Range, home to Mount MCKINLEY, or Denali, the highest point in North America at 20,320 ft (6,194 m). The coastal part of this region includes Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet. Lying southwest of the Alaska Range are the Alaska Peninsula and the ALEUTIAN ISLANDS.<br />
<br />
To the north of the Alaska Range, up to the Brooks Range, are low hill and valleys, or the Central Uplands and Lowlands. To the west are Alaska’s main river valleys (the state’s major river is the Yukon, flowing approximately 1,979 mi or 3,185 km) and to the north lies the state’s vast treeless tundra. America’s northern state has a rich and diverse past. Before becoming a Russian colony in the 18th century, the land was populated by some 70,000 natives, living in the the interior and southeast portion of the area. <br />
<br />
Here, the Tlingit and Haidi tracked caribou and fished. The Aleuts who inhabited the outer Alaska Peninsula hunted seals, sea lions, and whales. And the Yupik and Inupiaq Eskimos lived in harsher conditions while hunting for caribou, seal, walrus, and fish. In the 1740s, Russian fur-trading companies arrived on the Alaskan panhandle, and the way of life for the Aleuts was adversely affected. In 1778, the British explorer Captain James Cook visited the area, and a fur “rush” began. <br />
<br />
By the end of the century, British, Russians, and Americans were hunting in this newly formed Russian colony, governed by Aleksandr Baranov. The Russian colony, however, posed many problems for the Russian government. The distance from the Russian capital of St. Petersburg was difficult to overcome and food shortages were prevalent. The Russian settlements in northern CALIFORNIA were also failing as grain suppliers. In 1867, Russia sold its colony of Alaska to the United States for around two cents an acre. Many Americans questioned the deal and thus named the purchase “Seward’s Folly,” after William H. Seward, the U.S. secretary of state who negotiated the deal.<br />
<br />
For the remaining period of the 19th century, the Alaskan territory failed to attract farmers. However, many speculators became involved in the whaling industry, and the Gulf of Alaska turned into a haven for salmon fishing. Between 1878 and 1899, mainly because of Alaska, American canned salmon exports grew significantly. In 1896, gold was discovered in the Klondike River claim in Canada’s Yukon territory, near the border with Alaska. Gold prospectors soon traveled<br />
north and traveled through Alaska, and many prospected in Alaskan gold claims. Coastal towns such as Valdez and Juneau (the capital) were created. <br />
<br />
The gold rush lasted for over a decade, but by World War I, speculators began to dwindle across the territory. In the 1920s, Alaska’s white population primarily gathered along main transportation routes and in certain mining areas.<br />
<br />
The scene was virtually unchanged until the outbreak of World War II, which witnessed American military personnel being sent to bases in the area. By 1943, 124,000 military personnel inhabited Alaska, and fortifications were created in defense of the Japanese. The Alaska Highway was also finished during this period, which linked Alaska to Canadian railroads. The military remained in Alaska after the war, as part of the distance early-warning (DEW) radar stations to defend against possible Soviet missiles during the Cold War.<br />

In 1959, Alaska achieved statehood. In 1968, an arctic oil field was found at Prudhoe Bay, and three years later, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act was negotiated, which set up the creation of the trans-Alaska pipeline. The U.S. government gave 44 million acres (18 million hectares) and $962.5 million to the indigenous people.<br />
<br />
In return, the native Alaskans forfeited their rights to make aboriginal land claims. Thirteen regional and around 200 village corporations have thus invested in oil drilling and other Alaskan industries. All of the native Alaskans are individual shareholders in these companies.<br />
<br />
The pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez was constructed in the mid-1970s and resulted in incredible population increases to Fairbanks and Valdez. In the 2000s, oil money accounts for almost 80 percent of the state budget, and Alaska has become the United States’ largest oil-producing state. The money from the oil business has improved education, transportation, medical care, and communications.<br />
<br />
Overall, Alaska has the highest average household income in the country. However, the effects of oil production continues to be debated across the state, especially after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which affected Prince William Sound in 1989. This catastrophic oil spill of 10 million gallons damaged the ecosystem throughout the polluted area. In the early 2000s, debate centered on whether oil drilling should be conducted in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the remote northeast corner of Alaska.<br />

 from them, have been part of human culture for a remarkably long time. 
Archaeologists working at a site in the country of Georgia recently 
uncovered several pottery jars inside Neolithic ruins dating from around
 6000 <span class="small">B.C</span>. The jars contained a reddish 
residue—the remains of wine. This prehistoric wine was most likely made 
from wild grapes, as the domestication of grapevines didn’t begin until 
around 5000 <span class="small">B.C</span>. Sumerian texts from 3000 <span class="small">B.C</span>. contain some of the first written accounts of both grapes and wine.</div>

grapevines across the Mediterranean to Greece. From there, grapes and

health-enhancing compounds in grapes, it is the flavonoids, particularly
 resveratrol, that have gained international attention as powerhouse 
antioxidants. Resveratrol is concentrated in the skin, seeds, and stems 
of grapes and is an ingredient in dark purple grape juice and red wine that
 may help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce bad cholesterol and 
inflammation, and prevent blood clots. In general, purple and other 
dark-colored grapes contain greater concentrations of flavonoid 
compounds than light-colored grapes do.</div>

So is red wine better than white wine for your heart? 
Some studies do indeed show that red wine is superior to other types of 
alcohol, but others show that red wine isn’t any better than beer, white
 wine, or liquor for heart health. Thus, it is good news that 
researchers at Georgetown University have shown hat grape juice, similar to red wine, lowers the risk 
of developing blood clots that may lead to heart attacks. Further, grape
 juice is a good alternative for people who do not drink alcohol or want
 to limit their consumption. Another benefit to drinking grape juice is 
the antioxidant advantage. Researchers at the University of California, 
Davis, found that catechin, another key antioxidant in grapes, remains 
in the blood for more than 4 hours after grape juice is drunk, compared 
with only 3.2 hours for full-strength cabernet, suggesting that alcohol 
likely hastens the breakdown of catechin.</div>

A growing body of research is showing that extracts 
from grape seeds are beneficial for our health. Grape seeds contain 
powerful antioxidants known as proanthocyanidins, which may help prevent
 heart disease, diabetes, and cataracts. Studies in humans have shown 
that grape-seed extract can lower blood pressure and cholesterol and 
reduce inflammation.</div>

goldenseal is a member of the buttercup family that once grew in great 
abundance in the eastern deciduous forests of the United States. The <i>golden</i> part of its common name comes from the bright yellow interior of the plant’s fleshy rhizomes (underground stems). <i>Seal</i>
 is a reference to small, circular marks on the rhizome’s twisted, 
wrinkled surface that were thought to resemble the decorative seals once
 used to stamp warm wax onto envelope flaps.</div>

Native American tribes used goldenseal to produce a 
beautiful golden yellow dye. They also used the herb medicinally and 
introduced European settlers to its healing properties in the 1700s. A 
century later, goldenseal had gained such popularity that it was 
severely overharvested, an assault that continued into the 20th century,
 until wild stocks were legally protected. Now cultivated, but still 
scarce in the wild, goldenseal is a top-selling herbal supplement 
marketed to aid digestion, to treat infection, and to boost the immune 
system.</div>

Woodland goldenseal is one of the best-known 
indigenous North American plants. It was widely used by eastern tribes. 
Goldenseal was an official drug in the United States almost continuously

 of pharmaceutical companies, including Parke-Davis, Eli Lilly, and 
Squibb, manufactured and sold goldenseal products. Today, goldenseal 
remains a popular herbal remedy in the United States, particularly for 
the treatment of gastrointestinal complaints.</div>

Looking to the past can often prove useful when 
researching medicinal plants. As a clear demonstration of that, 
scientists at the University of Chicago recently found, in test-tube 
studies, that goldenseal extracts are highly active against multiple 
strains of <i>Helicobacter pylori</i>, a bacterium that is responsible
 for the majority of peptic ulcers and gastric cancers. While there are 
many compounds that contribute to the overall medicinal effects of 
goldenseal, berberine, a yellow alkaloid, is the primary infection 
fighter. Berberine destroys many microorganisms that cause diarrhea, 
including <i>Giardia lamblia</i> and <i>Entamoeba histolytica</i>. 
These organisms cause chronic diarrhea and can lead to significant 
dehydration and weight loss. Goldenseal and other plants containing 
berberine could play an important public health role, given that 
approximately 20 percent of the world’s population is chronically 
infected with <i>Giardia</i> and some 50 million people are infected with the amoeba <i>E. histolytica</i>.</div>
<div class="indent">
Goldenseal can be found in salves and ointments 
designed to help heal skin infections. Research has shown that berberine
 is effective for the treatment of psoriasis and may also be useful for 
minor fungal infections of the skin. While the taste of goldenseal is 
quite bitter, it can be very effective as a mouthwash and can also be 
used for treating canker sores and mouth ulcers.</div>

Alabama is made up of five major land areas: the East Gulf Coastal Plain, which covers roughly two-thirds of the state, excluding the section known as the Black Belt Prairie, where many plantations were located during the antebellum period; the Piedmont Upland found in the central section of Alabama, which is made up of low hills and sandy valleys; the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, which is made up of sandstone ridges and limestone valleys; the Cumberland Plateau, also known as the Appalachian Plateau, which is made up of varying sections of rolling hills and flat areas; and the Highland Rim in the northwest corner of the state, which makes up part of the Tennessee River Valley. The section of the East Gulf Coastal Plain around Mobile, which is the state’s largest seaport, is low and swampy. In the plains of southeastern Alabama, known as the wiregrass section, the soil is the most fertile within the state. Farming flourishes in this section with its fertile soil and easy water access. Waterfalls and caverns are found throughout the mountainous area of north Alabama.<br />

Until the beginning of the 21st century when manufacturing, government, and services began to dominate the economy, Alabama’s productivity was largely dependent on farming. Alabama’s economy continues to benefit from the production of farm products that include cotton, peanuts, corn, and hay. Chicken, cattle, dairy products, and hogs provide the majority of the state’s livestock exports. Top manufacturing products include textiles, fabricated metal products, transportation, paper, food, chemicals, plastics and rubber, and wood.<br />

Approximately two-thirds of Alabama is forested, and the state is home to more than 125 varieties of trees and more than 150 species of shrubs. Alabama’s trees include pines, oak, hickory, cypress, and southern magnolia. Shrub varieties include rhododendron, mountain laurel, azalea, and sumac. Animals found throughout the state include white-tailed deer, red fox, squirrel, muskrat, nutria, beaver, and rabbit. Game birds include ducks, geese, and quail, while the state’s most common songbirds are the yellowhammer, bluebird, cardinal, blue jay, and mockingbird. Minerals found in the state include coal, iron ore, petroleum, natural gas, limestone, gravel, bauxite, and clay.<br />

called the king of herbs, the root of heaven, and a wonder of the world.
 Used in China, Korea, and India for several thousand years, <i>Panax ginseng</i> is probably the most famous medicinal herb to have come out of Asia. Its North American counterpart, <i>Panax quinquefolius</i>,
 was discovered later but has similar effects and is prized almost as 
highly. Ancient Indian texts speak of ginseng as a life-giving plant 
with magical powers. Centuries ago, Koreans believed that ginseng’s 
leaves gave off a glow on moonlit nights.<br />
<br />
Ginseng hunters scanned the 
woods for the eerie radiance and shot arrows toward its source to mark 
the plant’s location so its valuable roots could be collected the next 
day. Ginseng hunting was fraught with dangers, but the rewards were 
great. As a result, wild ginseng in China had been harvested nearly to 
extinction by the 1600s. The discovery of <i>Panax quinquefolius</i> 
in North America in the early 1700s set off a ginseng rush. Many 
pioneers made a living digging ginseng roots out of the damp soil of 
eastern woodlands. Several early American entrepreneurs and explorers, 
including John Jacob Astor and Daniel Boone, were involved in the 
profitable ginseng trade, in which countless tons of American ginseng 
were exported to Asia.</div>

Ginseng is perhaps the best known of the herbal tonics, or adaptogens, with
 possible benefits for many different medical conditions. Adaptogens are
 often used to help strengthen the body to resist disease or to recover 
from illness. Each <i>Panax</i> species is a bit different; extracts 
of roots of different ginsengs contain different phytochemicals and thus
 have different effects. Laboratory research shows that extracts of both
 the whole root and isolated compounds act as antioxidants, affect 
immune system function, and combat inflammation.</div>

Clinical research has been done mostly on Asian 
ginseng. While Asian ginseng doesn’t control symptoms such as hot 
flashes in menopausal women, preliminary results suggest that extracts 
may improve quality of life and lessen fatigue and psychological 
symptoms. For 36 people with type 2 non-insulin-dependent diabetes, both
 100 and 200 mg of ginseng daily for 8 weeks helped with fasting glucose
 levels. Only those taking the larger dose had improvements in 
hemoglobin A1c tests, the standard tool for comparing blood sugar 
levels. Studies show that both ginseng species reduce blood sugar levels
 in people with type 2 diabetes.</div>

Studies also show that American ginseng reduces blood 
glucose levels in type 1 diabetics. Both species of ginseng enhance 
immune function. In one study, a specific Asian ginseng extract boosted 
immune response to the flu vaccine and reduced the number of colds.</div>

<b>How to Use</b></h2>

<i>Extract:</i> Standardized extracts of Asian ginseng containing 4 to 7 percent ginsenosides, dosed 100 to 200 mg daily.</div>

<i>Tinctures:</i> 1 to 2 ml, up to 3 times daily.</div>

<i>Tea:</i> Simmer 3 to 6 teaspoons of the root for 45 minutes in 3 to 4 cups water. Strain, cool, and drink a cup 1 to 3 times daily.</div>

<i>Capsules:</i> 500 to 1,000 mg dried powdered root, taken 1 to 2 times daily.</div>

There are different interpretations of the origin of the name Aconcagua. It may be derived from the native Quechua akun (“summit”), ka (“other”), and agua (“admired” or “feared”). Thus, Aconca-Hue is a Mapuche name for the corresponding Aconcagua River that, from Chile, “comes from the other side.”<br />

The relatively new mountain was created by subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. Geology of the Aconcagua area can be grouped in three basic time periods: a base that developed before the Jurassic period, Mesozoic sequences, and coverings from the Cenozoic period. Glaciers on Aconcagua include Lower Horcones Glacier, the Upper Horcones Glacier, the Los Polacos (or Los Relinchos) Glacier (a climbing route), and the Güssfeldt Glacier. Glaciers on Mount Aconcagua are, owing to more arid conditions, less pronounced than those to the south in Patagonia.<br />

Most of the vegetation and wildlife, because of the aridity and the short growing season at high elevations, are concentrated below 13,123 ft (4,000 m). Typical vegetation is low-growing brush (steppe) adapted to low temperatures, thin soils, and high winds. Unable to provide for his daughter through conventional means, Scott Lang turned his talents to burglary. After being arrested, the electronics expert furthered his studies in prison. Following and early release for good behavior, Lang went to work in the design department at Stark International, the corporation owned by Iron Man's alter ego Tony Stark.<br />

A model employee, Lang impressed Stark with his schematics for advanced security systems. But while work was important, Lang's daughter Cassie was his life - and his world crumbled when she was diagnosed with an inoperable heart condition. Cassie's health continued to deteriorate, and even salary increases from Stark International couldn't stem the ride of medical bills. Almost without conscious thought, Lang began to case certain wealthy neighborhoods - reluctant to return to his criminal ways, but seeing few other options.<br />

Cassie's only hope was surgeon Erica Sondheim, who had pioneered advanced techniques in critical-focus laser surgery. But when Lang visited the Sondheim Institute, he witnessed the doctor's abduction by Darren Agonistes Cross, president of the multinational conglomerate Cross Technological Enterprises. The ailing industrialist required Sondheim's expertise to correct his own heart condition, and was unwilling to wait in line for her specialized services. Leery of the Law, Lang planned to hire sufficient muscle to force his way into the Cross compound and rescue the doctor.<br />
<br />
Desperate for the cash needed to finance such an endeavor, he returned to one of the houses he'd cased, where he had noted and array of extremely sophisticated detection devices and assumed they were protecting valuable goods. In reality, Lang had stumbled upon the home of Hank Pym. Inside, he discovered the super hero scientist's original Ant-Man costume, along with several canisters of shrinking gas. Intending to free Sondheim by himself, Lang stole the equipment.<br />

Pym observed the theft, but chose not to reveal himself. Instead, he followed Lang to his destination Yellow-jacket, curios to ascertain Lang's intentions. Garbed as Ant-Man, Lang rescued Sondheim, who later operated successfully on his daughter. He planned to return the Ant-Man outfit to its owner, but Pym let Lang keep the costume - provided he put it to lawful use.<br />

As ant-Man, Lang assisted Iron Man and others, always willing to shrink to the occasion when duty calls. When Mr. Fantastic was believed dead, Lang worked with the Fantastic Four for a short period. a Fount of intellect and invention, he served as a valued atand-in for the elastic inventor, and has since returned to aid the team as needed. for years, Lang considered himself a part-timer crime fighter. Now a member of the Avengers, he strives to make the world a safer place for his daughter - and seeks to rise above his reputation as a poor man's Hank Pym.<br />
